WORKING WITH EMPLOYERS

What can universities offer to employers and conversely what can employers provide to higher education staff and students?

There is a common interest in enhancing the undergraduate learning experience, for example, by industry led projects, work placements and curriculum developments which respond to local and national economic priorities. The ultimate aim of enhancement is to enable undergraduate students to gain the ‘employability’ skills which employers seek within the context of an academic discipline. ‘Employability’ skills include self-management, team working, problem solving, communication and business awareness.

Seventy per cent of the 2020 workforce has already finished formal education. There is therefore also a need for higher education to put in place work based learning offers which are accessible to employees and acceptable to employers.
