The Wales Spoke vision for HE STEM centred on:
The impetus for the National HE STEM Programme was the identified critical importance of STEM in economic recovery and future innovation. The HE STEM Programme in Wales and England offered a holistic programme of activity across widening participation and higher level skills themes which:
- Addressed employer requirements for economically valuable skills by ensuring that the skills delivered by the STEM disciplines in HE align more fully with employer needs.
- Supported the development of more flexible, responsive and accessible provision in STEM disciplines, designed to facilitate (re-) engagement in HE study by the existing workforce.
- Sustained current efforts to increase demand for the STEM disciplines within higher education through targeted HE specific interventions with young people in school and college building on good practice.
In delivering this programme of activity, WIMCS worked with partners from across the education sector including professional bodies, the National STEM Centre, Sector Skills Councils, the Higher Education Academy, STEMNET, Reaching Wider Partnerships, Business in the Community, the National Science Academy in Wales, the British Science Association, Careers Wales companies, schools and colleges.
