Reader in Physics

Specialist Subjects: Theoretical Particle Physics, specifically Lattice Gauge Theory

My research work involves studying the interactions of quarks which are the main constituents of all known matter. In particular protons and neutrons (which make up the nucleus of atoms) are composed of three of these quarks. Unlike other physical theories, such as gravity, quarks interact in a very complicated fashion and pen and paper calculations of their properties often reach a dead end. The "lattice" approach, whereby continuous space and time are replaced by a discrete lattice of points, is a technique that overcomes this problem. In this method, quarks are simulated using some of the worlds fastest computers (see http://www.top500.org/) and predictions of the properties of quarks can be made.
